What is the probability of rolling an even number and then an odd number?

The probability of rolling an even number followed by an odd number is 14\frac{1}{4}, or 25%25\%.

When rolling a standard six-sided die, there are three even numbers: 22, 44, and 66, as well as three odd numbers: 11, 33, and 55. Consequently, the probability of rolling an even number on the first roll is calculated as follows:

Probability of rolling an even number=36=12.\text{Probability of rolling an even number} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{1}{2}.

Similarly, the probability of rolling an odd number on the second roll is also:

Probability of rolling an odd number=36=12.\text{Probability of rolling an odd number} = \frac{3}{6} = \frac{1}{2}.

To determine the combined probability of both events occurring in sequence—rolling an even number first and then an odd number—you multiply the probabilities of each individual event. Therefore, the calculation is:

Combined probability=(12)×(12)=14.\text{Combined probability} = \left(\frac{1}{2}\right) \times \left(\frac{1}{2}\right) = \frac{1}{4}.

Thus, the probability of rolling an even number followed by an odd number is 14\frac{1}{4}, which is equivalent to 25%25\%. This means that if you were to roll a die twice repeatedly, you would expect this specific sequence to occur approximately 25%25\% of the time.
