The process of converting digital data into analog signals is referred to as modulation. The modem takes binary data from your computer, represented as a series of 1s and 0s, and converts it into an analog signal. This analog signal typically manifests as a wave that varies in frequency, amplitude, or phase, depending on the information being transmitted.

Once the analog signal arrives at its intended destination, the modem performs the reverse process, known as demodulation.
