where:

  • VV represents the volume of the gas,
  • nn denotes the number of moles,
  • RR is the gas constant,
  • TT is the temperature in Kelvin, and
  • PP is the pressure.

This equation, known as the ideal gas law, is essential for determining the volume of a gas under standard conditions. Specifically, STP is defined as a temperature of 00 degrees Celsius (which is equivalent to 273.15273.15 Kelvin) and a pressure of 11 atmosphere.

The gas constant RR is typically expressed as 0.0821Latm/(Kmol)0.0821 \, \text{L} \cdot \text{atm} / (\text{K} \cdot \text{mol}) when using these units.

To effectively use this formula, you need to know the number of moles of the gas, as well as the temperature and pressure conditions. When working under STP, you can substitute the standard values for temperature and pressure directly into the equation. After substituting these values, you can solve for VV to find the volume of the gas.

It is crucial to ensure that all units are consistent when applying this formula. For instance, if the pressure is provided in atmospheres, the volume will be calculated in liters. Conversely, if the pressure is expressed in Pascals, the resulting volume will be in cubic meters.
