What is the difference between fermions and bosons?

Fermions and bosons are two fundamental types of particles that constitute the universe, distinguished primarily by their spin characteristics.

Fermions possess half-integer spin, which means their spin values are multiples of 12\frac{1}{2}, such as 12\frac{1}{2}, 32\frac{3}{2}, and 52\frac{5}{2}. Common examples of fermions include electrons, protons, and neutrons. One of the key principles governing fermions is the Pauli exclusion principle, which states that no two fermions can occupy the same quantum state at the same time. This principle explains why electrons in an atom must occupy distinct energy levels.

In contrast, bosons have integer spin, which means their spin values are multiples of 11, such as 00, 11, and 22. Notable examples of bosons include photons, gluons, and the W and Z bosons. Unlike fermions, bosons do not adhere to the Pauli exclusion principle, allowing multiple bosons to occupy the same quantum state simultaneously. This property is fundamental to the operation of lasers, which produce coherent light as numerous photons occupy the same energy level.

The differing spin characteristics of fermions and bosons result in significant implications for their behavior. Fermions are governed by Fermi-Dirac statistics, which describe their behavior in systems containing many particles. Conversely, bosons are described by Bose-Einstein statistics, which characterize their collective behavior in similar systems. These statistical differences lead to distinct properties, whereby fermions constitute matter, while bosons play a crucial role in mediating the fundamental forces of nature.
