How is work related to change in kinetic energy?

The Work-Energy Theorem establishes a direct relationship between work and the change in kinetic energy, making it a fundamental concept in physics.

This theorem asserts that the work done on an object is equal to the change in its kinetic energy. It is derived from Newton’s second law of motion and serves as a cornerstone of classical mechanics.

To understand this relationship, we first need to define work and kinetic energy. In physics, work is defined as the product of the net force applied to an object and the distance over which this force acts. It is measured in joules (J\text{J}) within the International System of Units (SI). Conversely, kinetic energy is the energy an object possesses due to its motion, and like work, it is also measured in joules.

The Work-Energy Theorem can be mathematically represented as:

W=ΔKEW = \Delta KE

where WW represents the work done on the object, and ΔKE\Delta KE signifies the change in kinetic energy. The equation indicates that these two quantities are equivalent.

This theorem is particularly advantageous in scenarios where directly applying Newton’s second law proves challenging, such as when an object is influenced by a variable force or is moving along a curved trajectory. In such instances, calculating the work done by the force and subsequently applying the Work-Energy Theorem to determine the resulting change in kinetic energy is often more straightforward.

In summary, the Work-Energy Theorem is a powerful analytical tool for understanding forces and motion. It allows us to connect the work performed on an object to the change in its kinetic energy, deepening our comprehension of energy transfer and conservation principles.
