This increasing atomic number is the primary criterion for the table’s arrangement.
The table comprises rows and columns, referred to as periods and groups, respectively. Each period corresponds to the energy levels of electrons within an atom. For example, elements in the first period possess electrons in one energy level, whereas those in the second period have electrons distributed across two energy levels, and so forth.
Conversely, the groups are vertical columns that classify elements based on similar chemical properties. There are a total of 18 groups in the periodic table. Elements within the same group share the same number of electrons in their outermost shell, also known as valence electrons. These valence electrons play a crucial role in determining an element’s chemical behavior. For instance, elements in Group 1, known as the alkali metals, are highly reactive due to having a single electron in their outermost shell, which they tend to lose in pursuit of a stable electron configuration.
Additionally, the periodic table is segmented into blocks that correspond to the types of atomic orbitals being filled with electrons. These blocks are identified as the s-block, p-block, d-block, and f-block. Each block signifies a distinct type of orbital, with the elements in each block having their highest energy electrons in that specific type of orbital.
