Explain how to find the equivalent fraction of 1/2

To determine an equivalent fraction for 12\frac{1}{2}, we employ the technique of multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same integer.

Digging deeper, an equivalent fraction is defined as a fraction that signifies the same proportion or value of the whole as the original fraction. For example, an equivalent fraction of 12\frac{1}{2} can be obtained by multiplying the numerator (the top value) and the denominator (the bottom value) by the same non-zero integer. For instance, if we multiply the numerator and the denominator by 2, we get (1×2)(2×2)=24\frac{(1\times 2)}{(2\times 2)} = \frac{2}{4}. In a similar manner, if we multiply by 3, we get (1×3)(2×3)=36\frac{(1\times 3)}{(2\times 3)} = \frac{3}{6}. Both 24\frac{2}{4} and 36\frac{3}{6} are equivalent to 12\frac{1}{2} as they signify the same portion of a whole.

The reason this method is effective is that multiplying both components of the fraction by the same integer does not alter the overall value of the fraction. This is akin to scaling a recipe up or down; the proportions remain unchanged. You can use any integer to generate an equivalent fraction, provided that it is applied to both the numerator and the denominator. For example, multiplying by 5 yields (1×5)(2×5)=510\frac{(1\times 5)}{(2\times 5)} = \frac{5}{10}, which is also equivalent to 12\frac{1}{2}.

The understanding of equivalent fractions is vital in various areas of mathematics, including the simplification of fractions, comparison of fractions, and solving equations involving fractions. It’s a key concept that assists in comprehending that different fractions can represent the same quantity.
